The story of Arthur von Schmidhaus
The refuge is located in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park (Carinthia), on the glacier-carved Dösener See lake. Geologically, this perfectly formed high mountain landscape is part of the "Tauern Window". A special feature next to the lake is the "Dösener Blockgletscher", a permafrost phenomenon that can be explored on a national park themed trail.

The history until 1960
In 1905, the ÖAV Graz section acquired a plot of land on Lake Dösen, on which the shelter was built in 1910/11 and inaugurated on 9 July 1911. This hut was made possible by a generous bequest from the director of the Graz Commercial Academy, A. v. Schmid. The uniquely beautifully situated refuge was renovated and extended several times, for example in 1927, 1930 and 1978/79.
